Game Recap: Baseball |

Chargers take two from Doane behind Wesselmann and Blair’s complete games

The Charger baseball team took two games from Doane Saturday, behind a pair of pitching gems from Jacob Wesselmann and Dalen Blair. The Tigers, who average 8.5 runs per game, were held to just one run in both games by the Charger duo.

"Just a tremendous day from Jake and Dalen today," said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "That has been one of the better offenses in the nation over the past month, and to do what they did is incredible."

Wesselmann took the mound in game one, picking up his seventh win of the season allowing just four hits and one unearned run. He struck out nine batters and gave up zero base on balls. Wesselmann has now pitched three straight complete games and has seven on the season.

Harrison Jestel led off the second inning with a walk, and advanced to third off two wild pitches. Cyler Melvin drove in Jestel, blasting his third home run of the season over the right field fence to take an early 2-0 lead. BC loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, but only managed to add one run off a Jared Sitzmann sacrifice fly that scored Connor Lange.

With two outs in the fifth inning, Doane's Aaron Mason doubled to left-center field. The next Tiger at-bat singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Mason on a Charger fielding error. With a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wesselmann retired the Tigers 1-2-3 to finish out the complete game win.

Melvin went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Jake Allen notched a double and Darnell Prince reached base on a walk and recorded one stolen base.

Blair followed up Wesselmann's performance with a gem of his own, throwing a one-run complete game (nine innings) to notch his sixth win of the season. He struck out eight batters and surrendered seven hits.

After a lead off walk from Allen, pinch runner Jacob Hubbard stole second and reached third on a Doane error. Melvin reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman, scoring Hubbard to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead. Jake Federico added an insurance run in the top of the eighth, driving in Matthew Hmielewski with a single to center field.

With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth, Doane's Luke LaChance doubled to left-center field cutting the Charger lead to 2-1. Blair closed out the game in the next at-bat, producing a ground out to Federico at shortstop.

Mike Anthony went 2-for-4 from the plate with a double. Jared Sitzmann, Federico, and Jestel tallied one hit apiece.

Briar Cliff improves to 29-13 overall and are 13-9 in GPAC play. The Chargers will look to pick up the weekend sweep tomorrow, with another doubleheader against the Tigers in Crete, Nebraska. Game one is set to start at 1 p.m.
