The Briar Cliff baseball team extended its unbeaten streak to five games Saturday with a 13-0 shutout win over Dakota State.
Jacob Wesselmann had a stellar performance on the mound for Briar Cliff, giving up only two hits while striking out nine batters and walking zero in his complete game shutout.
"It's always good to get the first one in a series," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "Wesselmann was lights out for us and the bats stayed hot. Overall, a great outing for the guys and we're excited to get back at it tomorrow.
Darnell Prince got the Chargers rolling early with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead after one frame. BC tacked one on in the second on an RBI line drive by
Jake Federico to score
Cyler Melvin and extend the lead to 4-0.
Harrison Jestel scored Melvin in the bottom of the fifth for the 5-0 lead and
Connor Lange blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to make it a 9-0 game.
With two outs down in the bottom of the sixth, it looks like the Trojans scoreless in the frame but Jestel hit a two-run blast to extend the lead to 11 and added two more for the 13-0 final.
The Chargers outhit the Trojans 10-2 and were led at the plate by Federico, Jestel and Prince, who recorded two hits apiece. Lange's four RBIs were a game-high and Prince and Jestel each had three.
Devin Deboer takes the loss for Dakota State, giving up five hits and eight runs in his four innings on the mound. Jackson O'Neal and Jace Pribyl recorded the Trojan's only two hits.
Briar Cliff has outscored opponents 51-19 so far this season as they move to 5-0.
The Cliff will be back in action against the Trojans again Sunday in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 12 p.m. in St. George, Kansas.
