Mike Power is currently in his second head coaching stint with the women’s basketball program and rejoined the Chargers in the 2006-07 season. He has led the Chargers to an overall record of 346-249 in his career and nine NAIA National Tournament appearances, including three Fab Four finishes, three Elite 8’s and two Sweet 16’s. His 346 career wins at Briar Cliff are the most any women's coach in school history. During the 2017-18 season, Power led the Cliff to a 10-21 overall record while going 7-13 in the conference. Power coached the player of the year in the NAIA during the 2009-10 season in Liz Grinder and has coached five first team All-Americans, two second team All-Americans and four third team All-Americans.
In his first stint as Briar Cliff's head coach from 1992-1998, Power guided the Charger women's basketball program to a 127-73 record and three consecutive NAIA Division II National Tournament appearances. In 1996, Power led the Chargers to Briar Cliff's first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance. The following year, the women's basketball team produced an undefeated (34-0) regular season, a school-record 37 wins, and a second-straight NAIA National Tournament appearance. The Chargers opened the 1997-98 season as the No. 1 team in the nation and held that spot for the majority of the season. They finished that season with another national tournament berth and a 31-4 record. Power's Chargers still hold many school and national records, including most steals in a season and points (per game and average per season).
Power's coaching portfolio also includes eight seasons at the NCAA Division II level, with head coaching stops at Metro State College of Denver, Colo.; Bemidji State University, Minn.; and Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall, Minn.
A native of Bismark, N.D., Power holds a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), Lincoln, Neb. During and after his time at UNL, he was assistant girls' basketball coach at Pius X High School and head women's basketball coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Neb., where he produced a 30-45 record.
Aside from coaching basketball, Power also serves as the director of the Briar Cliff Athletic Association.
He is married to Dr. Anne Power and resides in Dakota Dunes, SD with their six kids Claire, Jack, Casey, Sean, Grace and Sam.
