Zach McCabe is in his second season as a graduate assistant with the Briar Cliff men’s basketball program. McCabe will serve as both the JV head coach and a varsity assistant. McCabe is a former University of Iowa Hawkeye and played his high school ball at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City.

McCabe graduated from the University of Iowa in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in sports business studies. McCabe was a four-year member of the Hawkeye men’s basketball program and was a team captain during the 2013-14 season. He poured in over 850 points and snatched over 500 rebounds during his career at Iowa and was named to the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis All-Tournament Team. McCabe holds the school record for consecutive games played for the Hawkeyes, appearing in 137 straight contests.

During his time at Bishop Heelan, McCabe led the Crusaders to back-to-back state championships as a junior and senior and helped lead Bishop Heelan to four state tournament appearances. McCabe was named to the all-state tournament team twice and was a three-time all-state, all-district, all-conference, all-city, all-northwest and Omaha World Herald All-Western Iowa honoree selection. As a senior, McCabe was named the Iowa Class 3A Player-of-the-Year as he averaged 19.1 points per game and 8.6 rebounds and dished out 126 assists. He averaged 16.1 ppg as a junior and 13.8 ppg as a sophomore to finish his high school career third on the Sioux City career-scoring list with 1,317 points for the Crusaders.
