The Charger women's volleyball team battled Dordt on Saturday evening at the Newman Flanagan Center, but the Defenders came away with a 3-0 victory.
Briar Cliff came out aggressive in the opening set, taking an early 2-0 lead before Dordt responded with a 4-0 run. The Chargers stayed within striking distance throughout the frame, tying the score at 14-14 before the Defenders pulled away late. Dordt built a 20-15 advantage and eventually claimed the first set 25-20.
The second set featured another back-and-forth battle. Briar Cliff opened with a 1-0 lead and later fought back from an 8-4 deficit to tie the set at 8-8. The Chargers continued to battle, eventually evening the score at 15-15 and again at 18-18. Dordt answered with a late push, scoring four straight points to take a 22-18 lead before closing out the set 25-21.
Dordt controlled the third set from the start, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage and extending the lead to 13-6. The Chargers continued to fight, cutting the deficit to 17-11, but the Defenders closed the match on an 8-2 run to take the set 25-13.
Brooklyn Voss led the Chargers offensively with five kills while hitting .300 while
Alexis Even added six kills.
Aliyah Basham contributed four kills, and
Aubrey Hoeft finished with three kills and a team-high three block assists.
Reese Strouth led the Charger offense with 12 assists, while
Mia Torchia added 10 assists. Defensively,
Ireland Jackson recorded a team-high nine digs, while Strouth added seven and
Caton Firkins contributed five.
The Chargers return to action Wednesday September 16, hosting the #11 ranked Dakota Wesleyan Tigers. First Serve is set for 7:30 pm.
