The Briar Cliff softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday, earning a shutout win over Culver-Stockton in the opener before falling in game two.
Game 1 vs. Culver-Stockton – W, 5–0
Briar Cliff opened the day with a strong all-around performance, defeating Culver-Stockton 5–0 behind a dominant showing in the circle.
The Chargers struck first in the opening inning when
Sydney Mennenga singled to drive in the game's first run. BCU extended the lead in the second inning as
Sydney Ebel singled to center field, plating two more runs to make it 3–0.
Kaela Persico provided the final blow in the bottom of the fifth, launching a two-run home run to left field to seal the victory.
Aubrey White was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just two hits while keeping Culver-Stockton off the scoreboard.
Offensively, Ebel and Mennenga each recorded two hits, while Ebel and Persico drove in two runs apiece. The Chargers were aggressive on the base paths, swiping four stolen bases, and played clean defense without committing an error.
Elizabeth Austin led the defense with five putouts.
Game 2 vs. Culver-Stockton – L, 9–0
Briar Cliff was unable to keep the momentum in game two, falling 9–0 to Culver-Stockton.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run double before breaking the game open with a seven-run fourth inning. Culver-Stockton capitalized on five hits and a Briar Cliff error during the decisive frame.
Lead-off hitter Austin paced the Chargers offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Briar Cliff again showed speed on the bases, totaling four stolen bases in the contest.
Briar Cliff returns to action Wednesday as the Chargers take on Oklahoma Wesleyan. Game times are set for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.Â
