BASEBALL BATTLES THROUGH FOUR-GAME STRETCH

The Briar Cliff baseball team traveled to Ozark, MO for opening weekend. They faced off with Baker University, Kansas Christian, Mission University, and Southwest Christian.

Game 1 vs Baker University – L, 3-2
Briar Cliff struck first in the opening inning, plating two runs to take an early 2–0 lead. Cade Marquardt jump-started the offense with an RBI double to center that scored Raenan Padilla, and Connor Neubeck followed with an RBI ground-out to bring home Nico Sall.

The Chargers held that advantage into the sixth behind a strong outing from starter Nick Hays, who kept Baker off the board through five innings. Baker broke through in the sixth, scoring three runs on a pair of hits, including a two-run home run, to take a 3–2 lead they would not relinquish.

Hays went the distance on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out six over six innings. Marquardt led Briar Cliff at the plate with a double and an RBI, while Caleb St. Cyr and Damon Schmid each added a hit.

Game 2 vs Kansas Christian – W 14-6
Briar Cliff used a balanced offensive attack to earn a 14–6 win over KCC.

The Chargers opened the scoring with four runs in the second inning, sparked by a Schmid triple and capitalizing on KCC miscues. Sall added a big swing in the fourth, launching a two-run home run to extend the Cliff's lead to 8–4.

BCU put the game away in the sixth with a six-run inning, highlighted by RBI's from Schmid, Grant Devecsery, and Kyle Capece.

Sall led the Chargers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI's, while Schmid added two hits, a triple, and an RBI. On the mound, Carter Schorg earned the win, and Zach LaMont struck out five in relief to close out the victory

Game 3 vs Mission University – L, 3-1
The Chargers again got on the board early, scoring in the first inning when Marquardt delivered an RBI single to bring home Jake Christianson for a 1–0 lead.

Mission answered with single runs in the third and fifth innings before adding an insurance run on a solo home run in the sixth to go in front 3–1. Briar Cliff threatened at times but was unable to push across another run late.

Padilla led the Chargers with two hits, while Marquardt drove in the lone run. St. Cyr also added a hit as BCU finished with four on the day.

On the mound, Brock Saya tossed 4.1 innings and allowed two runs while striking out four. Brett Sitzmann worked the final 1.2 innings in relief and recorded three strikeouts.

Game 4 vs Southwest Christian – L, 22-5
Briar Cliff faced a tough Southwestern Christian lineup in the weekend finale, falling 22–5 despite battling throughout all seven innings.

Southwestern Christian jumped out quickly, scoring nine runs in the top of the first inning to build early momentum. The Chargers answered in the bottom half of the frame, getting on the board when St. Cyr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Padilla to score.

BCU continued to chip away in the second inning, as Padilla delivered a sacrifice fly to bring home a run and make it 14–2. The Chargers' biggest swing came in the fourth inning when Marquardt launched a three-run home run to center field, scoring Sall and Padilla to cut the deficit to 17–5.

Southwestern Christian added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away and secure the win.

Marquardt led the Chargers offensively, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Padilla also scored twice and drove in a run, while Schmid, Jake Bussom, and Brody Nardini each recorded hits for Briar Cliff.

The Chargers return to action Thursday, February 12, traveling to Ave Marie Florida.
