The Charger wrestling team fell 24-17 to the Northwestern Red Raiders Friday evening inside the Newman Flanagan Center.
Â
"First, I would like to give a hat off to Coach Dahl and his team. They brought the fight and found a way to come out on top in the 50/50 toss up matches," said Head Coach
Donaco Watts. Â "With that said, we definitely had a few standout performances of our own. Dariuz was able to get a win over a seasoned veteran who's been a National Qualifier in the past. Jackson shook off an early take down to register a dominant tech fall. And Erik gutted out a victory against another upper class man." We have several guys who are on the cusp of breaking through to a new level, and we'll continue working until that comes to fruition."
Â
After opening the contest with a forfeit at 125, freshman
Dariuz Black put the Chargers up 9-0 early in the dual after he earned a decision victory over the Red Raiders' Johnny Burnette.
Â
Jackson Balmer in the 165-pound bout earned a technical fall in his match up to put give The Cliff 14-10.
Â
Erik Lessears earned a decision victory in the following match to put the Chargers ahead 17-10.
Â
The Red Raiders would take the final three match ups of the night to take the 24-17 victory.
Â
"We have several guys who are on the cusp of breaking through to a new level, and we'll continue working until that comes to fruition." said Watts.
Â
The Chargers fall to 1-6 (1-3 GPAC) and will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Worthington, Minnesota to compete in the Worthington Open.
