Briar Cliff Knocks Out A Split

DUBUQUE, Iowa –The Briar Cliff University volleyball team (2-2) picked up a split, Friday night at the Kehl Center.  The Chargers lost 3-2 (21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-12) to Clarke (1-1) and bounced back to beat University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (0-2) 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-12).

The first set was back and forth until 11-10, Clarke.  The Pride scored three straight to go up 14-10.

Briar Cliff came back with a 9-1 run to lead 19-15.  It was Clarke's turn to rally with a 6-1 run to go up 21-20.  Sophomore Emma Brenelli smashed one down the middle to start a run of five straight points to take the opening set.

The second set was more of the same until 7-7.  Sophomore Aliyah Basham and freshman Aubrey Hoeft stuffed the blocker.  That ignited a 13-2 run to seal the set.

The third set went back-and-forth with the score tied at 18-18.  The Pride went up 23-19 but the Chargers forced an error and got an ace from sophomore Valeria Viroomal to make it 23-21.

Following a time out, Clarke went up 24-21.  BCU forced another error before the Pride got a kill to take the set.

In the fourth set, the Pride was leading 6-4 before reeling off seven straight points to effectively end the set.

The fifth set was the same as the first three sets.  It was a back-and-forth affair.  Down 12-11, senior Kiersten Baker smashed the ball off the block to make it 12-12.  Clarke scored the next three points to end the match.

For Briar Cliff, Brenelli had 15 kills, her third straight double-digit kill match, while junior Isabelle Lenz added 13 kills.  Junior Avery Beller had 31 digs.  The Chargers had a total of 13 blocks led by Baker, Basham and Hoeft with three each.  Baker also had nine kills and hit .273.

For Clarke, Rachel Haubert had 14 kills and hit .282 while Mattie Dafforn had 11 kills.  Rylie Bohanan collected 37 digs.

UHSP – W, 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-12)
In the first set, Briar Cliff could not put the pesky Eutectics away.  Five times, the Chargers led by at least four points.  Each time, UHSP climbed back in.

Down 21-18, the Eutectics scored three straight points to make it 21-21.  UHSP forged ahead 24-23.  Lenz blasted a bomb down the line to make it 24-24.  BCU forced an error and got a kill from Brenelli to finally close out the Eutectics.

In the second set, UHSP jumped out to an 11-8 lead.  Baker put the ball to the floor and senior Olivia Corey served up nine straight points to effectively end the set.

In the third set, Briar Cliff jumped out 12-5 and never looked back.

For Briar Cliff, Beller had 13 digs.  The defense was on fire holding the Eutectics to a -.103 hitting percentage and had 20 blocks.  Leading the charge was Baker with six blocks and freshman Payton Merth with five.

For UHSP, Macy Hendrix had 11 digs.

Briar Cliff stays in Dubuque, Saturday, Aug. 24, playing Calumet College of St. Joseph and UM-Dearborn.  The matches are scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
