Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CHARGERS FALL IN HOME OPENER TO FRIENDS

The Briar Cliff men's soccer team dropped their first match of the season Monday against Friends University. The Falcons won on Memorial Field 3-1 over the Chargers.

"We unfortunately did not bring the intensity and desire required to win today," said head coach Teren Schuster. "We will need to use this as a learning lesson for games coming forward. We will prepare better as a team this week and will look to bounce back on Saturday."

The Chargers applied pressure early in the contest, taking five shots, with four on frame in the opening 15 minutes. Andrew Buchanan was fouled in the penalty area in the fifth minute, which lead to a penalty kick from Nicolas Aanensen Karlsen. Karlsen beat the keeper on the left side for the Chargers first goal of the game and Karlsen's third of the season. Hjalmar Nilsson made three saves in the opening 45 minutes, holding the Falcons scoreless.

The Falcons tied the contest at 1-1 in the 55th minute with an unassisted goal. The Chargers quickly retook the lead two minutes later, as Mick Beinhauer made a touch pass to a streaking Hugo Mariage who buried his third goal of the season.

The Falcons attack would pick up in the final 15 minutes of the game, scoring in the 76th minute and the game winner in the 86th minute.

Mariage scored a goal in his third straight contest, with Karlsen has scored three times in the last two games. Nilsson made nine saves in his 90 minutes in net.

The Chargers will have one final tune up game before heading into GPAC matches next week. Briar Cliff hosts William Penn on Saturday at Memorial Field at 3:30 p.m.
