On their first game on Faber Field this season, the Briar Cliff women's soccer team upset #19 Hastings 1-0 Wednesday.
"We came out flying and knew what we had to do. We defended well, put the shifts in and grinded out the win," said head coach Gabrielle Parks.
Lerato Mosia worked the ball down the side of the field and earned a corner kick for the Chargers two minutes into the contest.
Hannah Shuttleworth curled the corner to the front of the net, and after bouncing off a pair of Broncos, found the foot of
Addison Frisch who buried the goal.
Frisch's goal was the only shot on net for the Chargers in the first half, while
Jaime Rowlands turned away four shots to hold the Broncos scoreless.
The Chargers had an opportunity early in the second half to extend their lead, as Sina Morel pushed the ball downfield. Shuttleworth fired a shot from just outside the penalty area but was stopped by the Bronco keeper.
In the 61
st minute,
Emily Moran played a beautiful ball between a pair of defenders to set up Mosia for a chance to add an insurance goal. Mosia, however, was unable to chip it past the Bronco keeper.
Rowlands kept a clean sheet as she made three saves in the final 20 minutes of play and 10 overall. Alongside Rowlands was the stellar play of the BC backline in
Tia Lisy,
Lova Modig,
Thea Dahlgren and
Sadie Jones.
Shuttleworth, Mosia and Frisch put shots on goal for the Chargers.
Next up for the Blue and Gold is a road matchup against Doane. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska.
