The Briar Cliff volleyball team fell to #16 Jamestown 0-3 Saturday afternoon in Jamestown, North Dakota.
"The level of volleyball in the GPAC is some of the highest in the nation," said head coach
Lindsey Weatherford. "I felt that our match with Jamestown showed us exactly what we need to work on going forward into GPAC play. Some of those things, like being relentless in defense, are developed over time and we are still developing that area of our game. We know what we continue to need to work on so hopefully we can do so at practice this week. Jamestown is a tough team and we will have to minimize our errors in the future to play them tough next time!"
The Chargers jumped out to a 4-1 lead off four Jimmies errors, including a block by
Toria Andre and Reece Strouth to start the first set. Jamestown outscored BC 9-1 over the next 10 points to lead 10-5. BC chipped away at the deficit and kills from Strouth and
Sami Wasmund tied the game at 22. However, the Jimmies closed out the set 25-22 off Briar Cliff errors.
Wasmund led the Cliff in the opening set with four kills. The Chargers hit .200% in the opening set, their highest of the match.
The defending national champions found their rhythm in the second set as they notched 18 kills at a .368 clip while holding the Chargers to a .034 hitting percentage.
In the third set, Jamestown continued their strong play with a 7-3 lead over the Chargers. Wasmund and Strouth battled back with kills, and an error by the Jimmies pulled BC to within a point. While the Chargers chipped away at the Jimmie advantage throughout the set, Jamestown never gave up the lead, taking the set 25-20.
Wasmund led the Chargers with eight kills and one block. Andre and Strouth ended the game with four kills each. Olivia Corey dished out 11 assists, while Yenne Schepers had eight.
Taylin Boettcher reached double-digits digs with 10, while
Avery Beller ended the game with eight.
The Chargers return to the Newman Flanagan Center on Wednesday when they host Dordt. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
