Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

BUCHANAN’S GOAL LIFTS CHARGERS TO GPAC OPENING WIN

The Briar Cliff men's soccer team kicked off their GPAC season with a 1-0 win over Dordt Wednesday. Andrew Buchanan's third goal of the season was the difference in the 1-0 win.

"It's great to start the GPAC off with a win and clean sheet," said head coach Teren Schuster. "As a team we know we can play better but we did enough to get the 3 points. We now look forward to Saturday."

With Buchanan scoring the game winning goal in the 34th minute of the first half, Hjalmar Nilsson kept the Defenders off the board with his first career shutout in the Blue and Gold. Nilsson made four saves on the day.

Alex Johnson corralled a bad pass from the Defenders and lobbed the ball over the Dordt defenders to Buchanan. With his first touch, Buchanan got past the Dordt goalie and would beat a pair of Dordt defenders to score the game winner.

Dordt was awarded five corner kicks in the second half, and put three shots on goal, but Nilsson and the Charger defense held them scoreless.

Hugo Mariage and Buchanan led the Cliff with two shots on goal. Nilsson stopped four shots in 90 minutes in net.

The Chargers will be on the road this weekend for a GPAC matchup with Northwestern. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa.
