CHARGERS FALL IN GPAC POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT OPENER

The Briar Cliff baseball team fell in their GPAC Postseason Tournament opener to Doane on Thursday afternoon in Crete, Nebraska.

The Chargers now enter the loser's bracket where they will face No. 5 seeded Jamestown in an elimination game Friday at noon.

Game 1 – L, 1-15
The Chargers put the ball in play early in the first frame as Trey Rogers led off the day with a single through the left side. Three other Chargers put the ball in play but could not advance Rogers around the bases.

The Doane bats proved to be timely from the get-go. Following a leadoff walk, Lukas White roped an RBI double to right-center field to get the scoring started. At the end of one, the Tigers held a slight 1-0 lead.

Following three-straight innings where nobody reached base, the Blue and Gold found the equalizing run in the top of the fifth. Jake Allen and pinch hitters Matthew Delgado and Jared Sitzmann each tallied a single in the frame. Sitzmann recorded an RBI to even up the game at 1-1.

The Tigers fought right back in the bottom of the frame, fueled by the game's only home run off the bat of Cristian Yanez. Through five full innings, Doane gained their lead back 2-1.

Doane kept the offense rolling in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits and a crucial Charger mistake. With two outs, the Tigers strung three hits together, including one double, pushing the Chargers into a five-run deficit.

The Charger bats were stymied in the seventh and eighth innings, while Doane put up crooked numbers in the scoring column.

In the bottom half of the eighth, the Tigers erupted for nine runs on eight hits to break the game wide open. Seven Tiger batters tallied an RBI en route to a late 15-1 lead.

Despite a single from Lange and double from Allen in the top of the ninth, the Chargers couldn't convert. The Doane lead proved to be too much as the Chargers fell in their eighth consecutive GPAC contest 1-15.

The Cliff tallied six hits in the contest and were led by Allen who carded two doubles. Four other Chargers recorded one hit apiece as Sitzmann found the lone BC RBI.

Kyler Steinborn went 7.0 innings on the bump for the Chargers, allowing nine runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Austin Carter and Rylan Aamold covered the final inning, allowing a combined six runs on five hits.

The Chargers are scheduled to face No. 5 seeded Jamestown in an elimination game in Crete, Nebraska on Friday at noon. Live stream and live stat links can be found at bcuchargers.com
