The Briar Cliff women's basketball team advanced to the NAIA Women's Basketball National Tournament Round of 16 Wednesday with an 87-79 win over Indiana Tech.
Konnor Sudmann poured in a game high 30 points as the Chargers moved past the Warriors in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Â
In a closely contested matchup between the No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed in the Fort Wayne Opening Round Pod, it was the Chargers fourth-quarter performance that proved to be the difference.
Â
A back-and-forth first quarter that saw the score tied three times and change hands four times, ended tied 18-18 after 10 minutes. Bethany Worm, who averages just over 6.6 points per game on the year, had the hot hand for the Warriors in the first scoring 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Peyton Wingert and
Payton Slaughter paced the Cliff with six points each.
Â
Kennedy Benne got the Cliff going in the second quarter with an early basket, which would jumpstart an 11-4 Charger run. The Warriors, however, would respond with 10 unanswered points to take a 34-31 lead. With two of BC's starting guards in first half foul trouble,
Kaegan Held and
Cadence Davis played key minutes off the bench, logging 15 and 14 minutes, respectively and combined for six points.
Â
Both offenses were clicking in the second quarter, with the Chargers connecting on 8-of-11 field goal attempts, while the Warriors shot 7-for-11 with three 3-pointers. The Chargers trailed by a narrow 35-39 margin heading into halftime.
Â
Indiana Tech built up their largest lead of the game, 46-37 two minutes into the third quarter. However, the Chargers began to chip away at the Warrior lead over the next seven minutes of play, outscoring Tech 18-8. The Chargers took a 55-54 lead after
Peyton Wingert's second straight 3-pointer and third of the quarter. Indiana Tech would regain the lead, 59-57 heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
Sudmann opened the fourth quarter scoring with a layup and proceeded to take over the BC offense. She scored 17 of the Cliff's 30 points in the quarter on 4-of-8 shooting while going 9-for-10 from the free throw line.
Â
The Warriors held the lead for the first five minutes of the fourth, before a timely 3-pointer from Wingert, her sixth of the game, started a 12-0 Charger run. With the lead in hand, Sudmann iced the game at the free throw line, converting 7-of-8 attempts in the final minute of play.
Â
As a team, the Chargers shot 15-for-20 from the charity stripe in the fourth, while playing defense without fouling and allowing only three free throws for the Warriors. The Chargers dominated the glass in the final period, tallying eight offensive rebounds (15 total) led by Benne's four offensive boards.
Â
Sudmann led the way with 30 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Wingert knocked down six 3-pointers and totaled seven rebounds. Benne added 11 points, nine rebounds (six offensive), three assists.
Â
BC won the rebounding battle 35-24 and had more second chance points 16-0. The Cliff totaled 14 points off turnovers, 36 points in the paint and shot 48.3% from the field.
Â
The Chargers will now prepare to face the Liston Quadrant's No. 1 seeded Indiana Wesleyan. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
