CHARGERS DROP PAIR OF GAMES AT BELLEVUE

The Charger baseball team traveled to Bellevue, Nebraska for a doubleheader against #5 Bellevue on Saturday afternoon. The Cliff dropped game one 9-3 and game two 7-6 (eight innings).

"We gave them way too many free bases all day and couldn't get the big hit when we needed", said head coach Corby McGlauflin. "It's hard to bear the #5 team in the country when that happens. Best part is we get another shot at them tomorrow."

Game 1 – L, 9-3
Briar Cliff found themselves in a three-run hole after the first inning. The Bruins plated their runs following two hit batters and a pair of hits.

Bellevue added to their lead in the third with an RBI single to left field from Eric Anderson. The Bruins added two more runs off a two-run homerun from Brendan Luther in the fourth to make the score 6-0.

The Chargers found their first run in the fifth inning off a Walter Hunt solo shot to left field. BC's defense added momentum holding the Bruins scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Briar Cliff tallied another run in the sixth to cut the lead to 6-2. Cam Reimer singled and Connor Lange added a double as Quentin Evers carded an RBI sacrifice fly.

Bellevue expanded their lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run homer from Alec Ackerman.

The Chargers crossed another run over the plate in the seventh following a Matthew Hmielewski double and a Bellevue error, cutting the lead to six. BC's comeback efforts were not enough as they fell in game one 9-3.

Brett Sitzmann went 5.0 innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and six runs with five strikeouts. Alex Kremer added an inning, allowing four hits and three runs to go with one strikeout.

Jake Chronic and Devon Farrell had two hits apiece while Reimer, Lange, Hunt and Hmielewski added one.

Game 2 – L, 7-6
After two scoreless innings, the Chargers scored the first two runs of the game after two sacrifice fly outs from Evers and Hunt.

The Bruins would respond with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the third. Bellevue carded four hits including a homerun to take the 4-2 lead.

Bellevue would add two more runs in the fifth off a two-run homerun from Mathieu Sirois, pushing the lead to 6-2.

The Chargers roared back with two runs in the sixth following a hit and two Bruin errors. Kyler Steinborn allowed one hit but kept Bellevue scoreless in the bottom half of the sixth.

BC scored two more runs in the seventh on a Jake Allen RBI single and a Farrell sac fly to tie the game at 6-6. Steinborn once again allowed one hit, but no Bruin runs to force the game into extra innings.

The Bruins held the Cliff scoreless in the top of the eighth and ended the game 7-6 an on RBI single to right field.

Ryan Riddle recorded 4.1 innings on the bump, allowing six hits and six runs while striking out four. Steinborn chucked the rest of the way, allowing four hits and one run and striking out five.

The Chargers tallied 11 hits as a team. Rogers, Lange, Chronic and Allen all carded two hits while Evers, Matthew Delgado and Hmielewski added on.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow at noon as they take on Bellevue in a single nine-inning contest.
