The RV Charger men's basketball team overcame a slow start to get back in the win column. The Cliff took down Mount Marty on the road Saturday 72-57 in Yankton, South Dakota.
Matthew Stilwill led the way with 25 points and seven rebounds.
Blake Sindelar scored 18 points and went seven-for-11 from the field.
Â
"Our defensive intensity to open the second half was huge for us tonight," said Head Coach
Mark Svagera. "I thought we made a lot of big plays defensively and were very disruptive. It's tough to win on the road and I'm proud of the toughness the guys played with tonight."
Â
BCU found themselves on the wrong side of a 7-0 run and trailed Mount Marty 18-11 midway through the first half. The Chargers pulled within three following a pair of free throws from
Tyrus Eischeid. With 4:06 left in the first half,
Kamden Wingert scored a layup off an assist from
Wil Lugar to tie the game 24-24. Sindelar would score on the Chargers next two possessions to give the Cliff a 30-26 lead heading into intermissions.
Â
Briar Cliff recorded back-to-back steals to open up the half and extended their lead to eight after a pair of free throws from
Jamison Helmers and layup from Lugar. With 17 minutes remaining, Garett Trapp crashed the offensive board and scored on a putback to put the Chargers up 36-28.
Â
The Lancers went on a 8-0 run to even the score when Jared Lopez intercepted a Charger pass to go coast-to-coast for a slam. The Chargers would take a six-point lead after Sindelar's kick-out pass to Stilwill ended with a triple. With 6:42 remaining in regulation, Lugar silenced the crowd, recording a steal and throwing it down at the other end, forcing a Lancer time out. Stout defense in the final minutes of regulation helped the Chargers close the game out to end their two-game skid.
Â
The Chargers improve to 9-2 (3-1 GPAC) on the season. They return to action next Wednesday, December 6, as they take on Dordt. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
