Trailing 66-60 with 10:45 remaining, the RV Charger men's basketball team stormed back to take a 98-90 road win against Midland Wednesday evening.
Matthew Stilwill scored 45 points, with 33 coming in the second half.
Â
Â
"Really like the toughness and resiliency we played with tonight to come away with a GPAC road win!" said Head Coach
Mark Svagera. "We had to really buckle down late in the second half to get some defensive stops."
Â
In the opening minutes of the contest,
Tyrus Eischeid nailed a triple off a pick-and-pop from
Blake Sindelar at the top of the key to give Briar Cliff a 12-6 lead. With 8:24 remaining in the first half, Eischeid knocked down his second three of the game off an assist from
Quinn Vesey to give BCU a 27-21 lead. The Warriors kept it close, as Jake Rueschhoff scored on a layup as the half ended to cut the Briar Cliff lead to 44-41.
Â
With 12:48 remaining in the contest, the Warriors took a 56-54 lead following a Derek Merwick layup. A layup from Ryan Larsen gave Midland a two-possession lead with little over 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Â
For the remainder of the game, Stilwill took over.
Â
Stilwill scored 27 points in the final 10 minutes of regulation, making tough contested layups and making the most out of his trips to the charity stripe.
Â
With the game tied at 79-79 with 4:10 left to play, Stilwill drove to the paint and scored through the foul. He sank the free throw to give Briar Cliff an 82-79 lead. The Warrior's Colton Uhing responded with a layup of his own to cut the lead within one. Stilwill the next possession scored another tough layup to push the lead back to three. After a defensive board from
Kamden Wingert,
Blake Sindelar dished it to Stilwill, who knocked down a triple, forcing a Warriors timeout. Stilwill extended the lead to seven following another layup with 1:38 on the clock.
Â
With a minute left, the Warriors were forced to intentional foul, sending the Chargers to the line. Briar Cliff went eight-for-10 at the Charity stripe in the final minute to take a 98-90 victory.
Â
Stilwill set a new career high of 45 points to go with seven rebounds and two assists. He went 13-for-19 from the field, and 17-for-18 from the free throw line.
Jamison Helmers recorded 14 points and knocked down three triples. Eischeid added 14 points and collected six rebounds in the contest.
Â
"Matt Stilwill was obviously huge scoring the ball again tonight," said Svagera. "I also thought Garrett trapp and Kam Wingert gave us a big defensive boost in the second half."
Â
The Chargers improve to 6-0 (1-0 GPAC) on the season. They will return to action next Tuesday inside the Newman Flanagan Center as they take on the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
