CHARGERS FALL IN FIVE TO DORDT

The Briar Cliff volleyball team fell short in five sets on the road to Dordt Wednesday evening in Sioux Center, Iowa.
 
"I'm super proud of the way our team played tonight, of course we would have loved a different result," said Head Coach Lindsey Weatherford. "Our blocking really made a statement in set two and we kept it going the rest of the night.
 
After dropping a close first set 25-19, the Cliff rebounded with a 25-23 win in set two. The Chargers got off to a 6-1 run after three Dordt attacking errors, forcing a timeout. Dordt would regain control in the last half of the set, taking a 23-21 lead and forced the Chargers to take a timeout. After the break, the Cliff scored four unanswered points, capped off by two kills from Makynna Snow to take the set.
 
Dordt took control early in set three and raced to a 16-6 lead at the halfway point, leading to the Defenders taking the set 25-16.
 
Facing a 2-1 deficit, the Chargers took an 18-15 lead in set four. Kills by Toria Andre and Filimaua Afatia would spark 9-2 run as Briar Cliff secured the set win 25-15. Sami Wasmund recorded three kills and two blocks during the set. Baylee Greene and Olivia Corey recorded a service ace.
 
The Chargers and Defenders battled to 10-10 score in the final set. Coming out of a Defender timeout, the Cliff found themselves down 14-10 after kills by Dordt's Ellie Weg and Macy Kamler along with two attacking errors by the Chargers. Dordt closed the contest out 15-10 to take the match. Charger's Yenne Schepers dished out four assists in the set, followed by Corey's three.
 
Wasmund led the Cliff in kills with 13, followed by Andre's 12. Greene and Corey recorded two service aces along with Schepers one. Andre, Wasmund, and Kiersten Baker each recorded six blocks in the match. Schephers dished out 32 assists followed by Corey's 17. The Libero Avery Beller recorded 32 digs followed by Jaice Johnsen's 16.
 
"Toria Andre and Sami Wasmund really showed up and terminated balls on the offensive end. Avery Beller was a force on defense with 32 digs," said Weatherford. "Baylee Greene and Olivia Corey have been serving very well down the stretch.
 
The Chargers return home Saturday, October 14th, with a showdown against Doane inside the Newman Flanagan Center. First serve is designated for 5 p.m.
