The Briar Cliff women's golf team finished round one of the Siouxland Invitational Wednesday at Landsmeer Golf Course in first place. The Chargers shot a team score of 331 (+43) and were led by
Helene Getz Bergmo's 77 (+5).
"It was an all-around good day for the Chargers," said head coach
Ben Irlbeck. "We certainly had a little rust to shake off and will build on our confidence tomorrow."
Bergmo began her season with a front nine score of 40 (+4), with six pars, two bogeys and two doubles. Bergmo found her stride at the turn, playing the back nine at +1. She enters tomorrow's round in a tie for second and is two shots off the leader.
Frankie Valencia sits fifth individually after an opening round score of 78 (+6). After a +6 start through six holes, Valencia played her final 12 holes at even par with one birdie.
Abbigale Miller is 9th with a score of 82 (+10) and had one birdie on the day.
Kelly Baade turned in a 94 (+22) and is in 42nd place.
Isabelle Marsala was the fifth member of the BC squad and matched Baade's score of 94.
As a team, the Chargers hold a one-shot edge over Mount Marty's team score of 332. The Lancers' Kelsey Heath paces the field with an opening score of 75 (+3).
Sophia Johnson, Addi Butler and
Katie Wight golfed as individuals for the Cliff. Johnson is in 39th with a 92 (+20) and had one birdie. Butler shot a 106 and is In 61st, while Wight shot a 113 (+41).
"The weather will be interesting tomorrow as we play a course with no trees and the wind threatens to blow at 40 miles per hour," said Irlbeck. "I like our chances in tough conditions as we have a group of players who can battle!"
The Chargers are back on the course tomorrow for round two of the Siouxland Invitational on The Ridge Golf Club in Sioux Center, Iowa.
