The Briar Cliff volleyball team fell in their homecoming match against Hastings 3-0 Saturday night in the Newman Flanagan Center. The Chargers were led by
Toria Andre who put down seven kills and took part in three blocks.
Â
"Our game tonight was full of errors, which really counted against us," said head coach
Lindsey Weatherford. "Our serve-receive passing was our strength tonight, and a combination of
Avery Beller and
Tannah Heath produced playable balls in defense.
Emma Porter really found Andre tonight and their strong connection took us on scoring runs with kills from the middle.
Sami Wasmund was clutch in set three and scored points for us at very crucial moments."
Â
The start of set one saw back-and-forth action with two lead changes and the score tying nine times. After the Broncos took a 20-14 edge, three straight points from the Chargers brought them within three.
Alexis Johnson was responsible for two of the Charger points with a kill and a solo block. Another three-point Charger swing brought them with two, 21-23 after an Andre block followed by a
Chloe Johnson kill. Hastings would score two straight points to take set one 25-21.
Â
The Chargers raced out to a 9-4 advantage in set two, but the Broncos answered with a run of their own to tie the set at 12-12. The Broncos closed out the second set 25-19 with three straight points. BC took an early 7-4 lead in set three behind two service aces and a kill from Wasmund. The Chargers was unable to sustain scoring runs in the later half of the third set and fell 25-16.
Â
Avery Beller had a team-high 15 digs, followed by Heath's 13. Wasmund totaled two aces while Porter dished out 26 assists.
Â
The Chargers travel to Madison, South Dakota Monday for a nonconference meeting with Dakota State at 7 p.m. The Chargers return to the NFC on Wednesday for a GPAC contest against Dordt.
