The Briar Cliff baseball team and Luther College faced off on the Field of Dreams Movie Site Friday night in Dyersville, Iowa. The Chargers scored early and often on their way to a 15-1 win over the Norse.
"I just hope our guys took the time to stop and look around and appreciate what tonight was all about," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "With so many people here and to get to play in front of their loved ones, it was a really special night. I'm proud of the way our guys came out and competed. They had a really great night and we loved every second of it."
On the field where dreams come true, over 2,000 Briar Cliff and Luther fans alike witnessed the first-ever collegiate game played on the Field of Dreams Movie Site. The 1964 AL Rookie of the Year, 8x All-Star and 2022 MLB Hall of Fame inductee Tony Oliva was in attendance at this historic game and threw out the first pitch.
After a scoreless top half of the inning from
Kyler Steinborn, the Charger bats came out swinging. Leadoff man
Jared Sitzmann singled to left field, bringing
Cam Riemer to the plate. Riemer picked up right where he left off from his spring season, belting a two-run home run into the cornfield.
With two outs in the inning,
Jake Chronic doubled to right field and drove in
Brayden Artzer. With the Charger bats hot,
Ryan Riddle made quick work of the Norse in the top of the second with a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts.
Matthew Delgado crossed home plate off a Luther error and the Cliff took a 4-0 lead.
Sitzmann scored his second run of the night in the third, this time off a double from
Jake Allen. Later in the inning, a Chronic single drove in two more runs.
Cyler Melvin drove in BC's eighth run of the contest, scoring
Matthew Hmielewski in the fourth. With the bases loaded, a Riemer ground ball to the third basemen turned into two runs off a pair of errors from the Norse.
The Briar Cliff offensive onslaught was capped off by
Drew Petersen in the seventh inning. Petersen hit a rocket into the corn in right field for a grand slam to go up 15-1.
Rylan Aamold closed out the win for the Chargers with a strikeout in the top of the ninth.
In total, 11 Chargers recorded a hit and four had an extra-base hit. Petersen tallied four RBIs, Chronic had three and Riemer drove in two.
The Chargers sent out 10 different pitchers to the mound, and they delievered for pitching coach
John Nolan. The pitching staff surrendered just three hits, one run and struck out 12 batters. BC's defense was consistent throughout the night, committing zero errors.
