Helene Getz Bergmo grabbed a first-place finish at the Lila Frommelt Classic Thursday, beating Morningside's Sofia Castelan on a second playoff hole. The Chargers placed second as a team with a score of 656 (333, 323).
 
"Proud of the battle we fought today. We've raised the bar mentally on scoring expectations," said head coach Ben Irlbeck. "I've seen it in the grind we've shown on the course. Yes, we still have bad stretches, but they are a few holes and we are seeing more birdies following the tough stretches. Our bounce back stat is much improved!"
 
Bergmo paced the field after round one with a 74, she followed that up with a score of 76 (+4) today. She went birdie-birdie to start the round and after 36 holes was tied with Catelan at the top of the leaderboard. Bergmo's par on the second playoff hole secured the win.

"We are all excited for Helene. She's worked hard to get to this point—individually leading a tournament after a round and (maybe the most difficult) following that round up with another round strong enough to win," said Irlbeck. "I fully expect the momentum to carry over to the next tournament and to her teammates."
 
Frankie Valencia shot the low round for the Cliff with a 75 (+3). Valencia tied for sixth with a total score of 160. She had one birdie on the day and three over the tournament. Grace Johanson finished with a score of 85 in round two and placed 41st overall.
 
"Frankie played a quiet, impressive round today. Her senior leadership has been fantastic on and off the course. Looking forward to the Le Mars event next week!" said Irlbeck.
 
Abbigale Miller turned in an 87 on the day and tied for 22nd with a total of 172. Kelly Baade posted an 88 in her second round and finished in 28th place with a 177. 
 
 Briar Cliff is back in action next Monday in Le Mars, Iowa for the National Invitation Tournament hosted by Texas Wesleyan on Willow Creek Golf Course.
