The Briar Cliff women's golf team took first place for the second time in the last three tournaments at the Iowa Central Invite Sunday. The Charger men placed second at the invite and posted the lowest team score of the day, an improvement of 17 strokes from their first round.
"Molly's bounce back round set the pace today," said head coach
Ben Irlbeck. "After an off day yesterday, her solid play solidified the win. I was honestly more surprised by her poor play yesterday than her stellar play today She has really been striking the ball well the last couple weeks and getting good touch with her chip shots."
Molly Diekmann paced the Chargers in the final round of the tournament, posting a 76 (+5) to finish at +21 overall. Diekmann's score was the lowest in the field and helped her to a t-10th place finish. Diekmann took advantage of the par 5's today, playing them at -1.
Helene Getz Bergmo finished tied for third with a total score of 157 (+15). Bergmo has now finished top-three individually in her last three tournaments.
Frankie Valencia posted a 160 (+18) and tied for fifth. Valencia played holes 10-18 the best at +3.
Grace Johanson just missed a top-10 finish, tying for 13th with a score of 165 (+23).
Emily Harste was the fifth member of the Charger squad and was 17th with a 171 (+29).
Kelly Baade golfed individually and tied for 32nd.
"We certainly can't overlook the rest of the squad though either," said Irlbeck. "Helene continued to play extremely consistent, and Frankie carded another pair of good rounds. I hope we continue to peak through the next two weeks as we approach the conference event."
Mason Collins led the Charger men with a second-place finish. Collins recorded the lowest round of the day at -1. He tallied two birdies and rolled in an eagle on the 15th hole. He improved by four strokes in round two to finish with a score of 144 (+2).
