Chargers go 2-1 in Friends tournament

The Charger softball team went 2-1 in the Friends tournament Saturday in Wichita, Kansas. The Cliff started off the day taking down Peru State 6-4, then moving through Waldorf 11-0, before falling 2-15 to Friends to cap off the evening.

Game 1 vs. Peru State - W, 6-4
Both teams scored an early run in the first inning, as Kylee Lukes doubled to drive in Josie Chronic.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Chargers created two-out lightning after singles to put two runners on base. The next at-bat Georgia Krohn reached on base off an error, scoring Chronic all the way from second base. Aubrey Chichuruka hit a double to left field, scoring Lukes and Khron as the Chargers took a 4-1 lead. Jessica James followed up with a double of her own, driving in Chichuruka as the Cliff led 5-1 after three.

The Chargers added an insurance run, as Alexis Westercamp singled driving Chichuruka in the bottom of the fifth.

Andrea Page tried to rally Peru State back into the game, trailing 6-2, she hit a two-run shot to bring them within two. In the top of the seventh, the Chargers were able close out the game and preserve the 6-4 victory.

Karina Cupples went 3-for-4 on the day while Chronic went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Chichuruka was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

Game 2 vs Waldorf - W,  11-0
The Chargers got off to a hot start, starting the bottom of the first with two runs. Krohn's single to left field drove in Chronic and Cupples to take a 2-0 lead.

The Chargers poured it on the Warriors in the bottom of the second scoring eight runs. An error by the Warriors allowed the Chargers to move to a 4-0 lead after Westercamp and Callie Billings scored. Krohn drew a walk scoring Cupples shortly after, followed by Chichruka RBI single to drive in Chronic. The Chargers after two innings led 10-0.

The Chargers added an insurance run in the fourth, as Hunter Pitts scored off an error by the Warriors to lead 11-0.

The Cliff pitching staff of Kayla Gurrero and Mackenna Raby combined to go five innings and surrendered four hits and recorded six strikeouts.

Game 3 vs Friends - L, 2-15
The Cliff was unable to stay with the hot bat of Friends, trailing 7-0 going into the top of the fourth. Lukes got the Chargers on the board after Chichuruka grounded out to a fielder's choice to cut the lead 7-1. Lukes hit a single RBI and drove in Billings in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the Chargers fell 2-15.

The Chargers improve to 6-7 overall, and will travel to Canton, Missouri on Thursday to take on Culver Stockton in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. with game two shortly after.
