In their first tournament of the spring season, the Briar Cliff women's golf team took first place at the Central Baptist Invite behind a second-place finish from
Helene Getz Bergmo. The Charger men placed sixth in the tournament and were led by
Shaunak Rama.
The women finished with a team score of 690 and won by 42 strokes over second place. The Charger men turned in a 634 and were just four strokes off a top-five finish.
"What a day we had on the course," said head coach
Ben Irlbeck. "The course was near unplayable, but the ladies got it done! Very proud of the performance Helene put together. She lost to a birdie on the fourth playoff hole and had 4 pars in the playoff."
While playing in tougher conditions in day two due to the rain, Bergmo posted an 84 to finish at +21 through 36 holes. She was tied with Southwestern's Cristina Galban after round two and went to playoff holes. After three straight pars in the playoffs, Galban took first place with a birdie on the fourth hole.
Molly Diekmann and
Grace Johanson placed in the top-10 individually. Diekmann carded a 170 (82, 88) to finish sixth, while Johanson tied for 10th with a 177 (88, 89).
Abbigale Miller placed 12th with a score of 178 (89, 89), and
Emily Harste was 16th turning in a 186 (93, 93).
"The men struggled down the stretch today, but I'm optimistic they are going to break through at the next event," said Irlbeck.
Rama paced the Charger men with a t-8th finish. He played the front nine +1 but followed with a +6 on the back. He finished his tournament with a score of 151 (72, 79).
Andrew Arndorfer turned in a 157 (77, 80) and tied for 18th.
