Westercamp homers twice to lead Chargers to 2-0 day

The Charger softball team went 2-0 Sunday, beating Missouri Valley 18-15, and Stephens 7-1 later in the day.  The Charger bats were red hot, generating 34 hits in two games.

"I am so proud of how the girls fought in game one," said head coach Erin Bly. "Every inning they applied pressure at the plate and it was a true team win."

The Chargers opened the top of the first inning by scoring five runs. Aubrey Chichuruka started the scoring off with a RBI single, followed by a grand slam from Alexis Westercamp to take a 5-0 lead. The Vikings responded in the bottom of the first with two homers of their own, to trail 5-4 after the inning.
 
In the top of the third, the Chargers ripped of six runs, powered by Chichuruka's single that drove in two runs. Georgia Krohn followed it up with a RBI single and the Chargers took a 11-4 lead.
 
In the top of the fourth, Josie Chronic singled to center field to drive in Karina Cupples, and Chichruka earned her fourth RBI of the day with a single to right field.
 
In the top of the fifth, Kennedy Anderson singled to center field driving in Jessica James and the Chargers led 14-9. MVC wouldn't shy away, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fifth powered by a Brianna Vela two-run homer, and the Vikings took their first lead of the game, 15-14 heading into the sixth. 
 
BC rallied back in the top of the seventh, as Chichurka and Cupples drove in runs to take a 17-15 lead.  Krohn capped off the scoring for BC, driving in Chronic to give them an 18-15 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers were able to get out of a jam and preserve the win despite having three runners on base.
 
Chichruka went 4-for-4 with five RBIs followed by Chronic and Cupples who both went 4-for-6.
 
Game 2 vs Stephens - W, 7-1

"Game two, Kayla G went the distance for us on the mound and gave our offense the space they needed to adjust at the plate," said Bly. "It was two great team wins today!"

BC got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the third. Chichruka drove in Cupples, followed by Krohn's sac fly to drive in Chronic.
 
Westercamp, in the top of the fourth, scored on an error and the Chargers took a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth. 
 
In the top of the fifth, an error by Stepehns allowed the Charger to tack on three runs. Westercamp followed with a solo homer to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead.
 
Stephens scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Chargers closed the door on any comeback, taking the game 7-1.
 
Kayla Gurrero went the full seven innings in the circle, giving up six hits and one earned run.  She struck out seven batters on the day. Chichruka was 3-for-4 on the day while Westercamp went 2-for-4 with a solo homer.
 
The Chargers are riding a four-game winning streak and begin GPAC play with Jamestown in a doubleheader March 19 at Bishop Mueller Field. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m. with game two to begin shortly after.
