The Briar Cliff baseball team opened up a nine-game homestand with a 2-0 sweep over Southwest Minnesota State Tuesday.
Cam Riemer reached base six times with two home runs, six RBIs and four runs.
"It was a great day to get back on track," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "Our bullpen guys really stepped up during a busy week and some of our bats got back on track."
Game 1 – W, 10-6
After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Chargers answered in the bottom half with two runs. BC loaded the bases after leadoff man
Jared Sitzmann singled, followed by back-to-back hit by pitches. The Chargers took a 2-1 lead after Sitzmann scored off a
Walter Hunt sacrifice fly and Riemer crossed home plate on a throwing error in the relay. The Mustangs would make it 3-2 after scoring two runs in the third.
The Chargers tied it at three in the bottom of the third as Riemer and Hunt notched their second run and RBI, respectively.
The top of the fourth say plenty of scoring, with two runs from the Mustangs and six from the Chargers. The inning was capped off by Riemer's two-run home run over the left field fence.
Riemer went 1-for-2 with one walk, three runs and two RBIs. Hunt went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Seven Chargers recorded a hit and six scored at least one run.
Austin Carter pitched 4.0 innings in relief to earn the win. He allowed four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.
Game 2 – W, 6-3
After two scoreless innings to start the contest, the Mustangs scored first in the top of the third.
Trevor Adler doubled to kick off the bottom half of the inning and was later drove in by Riemer to tie the game at 1-1.
The Cliff extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Riemer sent his second two-run homer over the left field fence. The Mustangs tried to rally in the seventh, scoring two runs to trail 3-4.
The Chargers added an insurance run in the sixth with Riemer's fourth RBI of the game.
Trey Rogers scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to go up 6-3.
With no outs and runners on first and second,
Alex Kremer took the mound in relief. Kremer closed out the win with three straight strikeouts.
Riemer tallied three hits, four RBIs and one run.
Connor Lange tallied two hits and
Matthew Hmielewski scored twice.
Tyler Kjose picked up the win after allowing just four hits and one earned run in 5.0 innings of work. Kremer recorded his first save of the season.
The Chargers are back at Bishop Mueller Field on Thursday and Friday for a three-game series with Valley City State. First pitch of Thursday's single nine-inning game is set for 2 p.m., while Friday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
