Quinn Vesey poured in a season high 26 points to lead the #25 Chargers to an 81-78 win over Morningside Saturday evening. The Chargers secured the season sweep over the Mustangs and improve to 17-7 (13-3 GPAC).
Â
"Really proud of our guys effort and intensity for an entire 40 minutes," said head coach
Mark Svagera. "We had a couple execution lapses there in the second half, especially the last few minutes, but our guys made some tough plays down the stretch. To find a way on the road to go get that win in a great environment is pretty fun."
Â
Vesey opened the contest scoring eight of the Chargers first 14 points as they held an early eight-point edge. A layup from
Nick Hoyt pushed the BC lead to 10, but the Mustangs answered with a 12-1 run, taking an 18-17 lead with 9:04 left in the first half.Â
Â
With just under seven minutes left in the half, a Vesey bucket jumpstarted a 15-2 Charger run, capped off by a
Conner Groves 3-pointer. Groves scored eight points during the run with two treys. Vesey connected on a 2-point jumper right before the halftime buzzer as the Chargers led 34-26 after 20 minutes.
Â
Similar to the start of the game, Vesey scored seven of the first 10 Chargers points to open the second half. After a Groves layup, Vesey stole the inbound pass and knocked down a corner 3-pointer to give BC a 43-30 lead three minutes into the half.Â
Â
BC took their largest lead of the night after a 10-2 run, fueled by eight points from
Jaden Kleinhesselink with 13:50 remaining. The Chargers held a double-digit lead for the next 11 minutes, before the Mustangs began to chip away at the Charger lead. Morningside cut the lead to one-point with 1:13 remaining off a 12-0 run. Hoyt knocked down a pair of free throws with :59 seconds remaining, but Aidan Vanderloo quickly responded with a jumper as BC led 79-78. Vasa gave the Cliff a three-point lead with a paint bucket, assisted by Vesey, and Will Pottebaum's game tying 3-point shot missed wide. The Chargers secured their first win in Allee Gym since the 2016-17 season.
Â
Along with his 26 points, Vesey had five rebounds, four assists and three steals on 9-for-12 shooting. Groves added 12 points and Kleinhesselink chipped in 11 points.
Matthew Stilwill had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Â
"I can't say enough about how proud I am of our guys right now and how tough they played and how together they've stayed throughout the whole season," said Svagera. "It's obviously a great win but we're going to move forward and get right back at it Monday with a nonconference game."
Â
The Chargers shot 59.6% from the field and 40.7% from deep, compared to Morningside's 48.3% shooting and 47.6% from deep. BC scored more points in the paint 36-28, while the Mustangs had more bench points 27-21.
Â
Vanderloo paced the Mustangs with 16 points. Zach Imig recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Pottebaum chipped in 14 points off the bench.
Â
The Chargers head to Peru, Nebraska Monday night for a 7:00 p.m. nonconference meeting with Peru State.
