Briar Cliff wrestling competed in day two of the GPAC Championships in Mitchell, South Dakota Saturday. The tournament was highlighted by a second-place finish from
Jeremiah Glise at 184-lbs. As a team, the Chargers placed fourth with 84 points.
"It's been my pleasure to work with this group, a great team with character and talent," said head coach
Joe Privitere. "CaRon and Ben will represents us at the national tournament, and I'm excited to see what they can accomplish."
Glise dominated his first bout of the day over Garrett Cornwell (Doane) with a 15-0 tech fall to move on to the championship match. He met Luke Jenness (Northwestern) and fell by a 5-1 decision.
At 125,
CaRon Watson won by 19-3 tech fall over Isaac Agabin (Concordia) to advance to the third-place match where he would face teammate
Seth I'nama. I'nama pinned Sean Heeney (Northwestern) in 6:21 in his opening match. Watson won by major decision 11-3 over I'nama to take third.
Ben Peters matched up with teammate
Andrew Shea in the 149-lb. consolation semifinals and won by a 4-2 decision. Peters then won by a 19-3 tech fall over Trystan Berry (Hastings) to finish third. Peters won by tech fall three times over the two-day tournament. After falling to Peters, Shea then dropped his fifth-place match 4-2 against Erik Rodriguez (Northwestern).
Maximus Barajas fell to Edrich Northje (Hastings) to move to the 141-lb. fifth-place match where he downed Trey Schuck (Northwestern) 9-4. In the 157-lb. consoliation semifinals,
Garrett Arment fell to Caleb Conner (Morningside), but bounced back in the fifth-place match with a pin (0:36) over Edward Punzalan (Northwestern).
Watson and Peters will represent the Chargers at the NAIA National Tournament on March 4 in Wichita, Kansas after earning wild-card selections which was voted on by the conference.
