The Briar Cliff women's basketball team saw their five-game winning streak end Tuesday night to #13 Dordt. The Chargers fourth quarter comeback bid fell just short as they move to 5-2 (2-1 GPAC) on the season.
Â
The Chargers scored the first four points of the contest, and the score was tied four times in the opening 10 minutes. However, a Janie Schoonhoven bucket at the 2:29 mark would be the last time the score changed hands with the Defenders holding a lead the rest of the way.
Â
Dordt led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but a 7-2 run to close out the half brought the Chargers within six points of #13 Dordt.
Kaegan Held led the Cliff in the second period with six points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Â
Kennedy Benne and
Konnor Sudmann led the Chargers with 13 combined points in the third quarter but were matched by 16 points from Schoonhoven and Bailey Beckman for Dordt. Behind Benne and Sudmann's play the Chargers tied the score three different times in the quarter. The Defenders answered with runs of their own and built their lead back to 10 heading to the fourth.
Â
With 7:34 remaining Dordt took their largest lead of the night, 70-54, but the Cliff would claw back into the game by outscoring Dordt 19-7 over the next six minutes. Each Charger point was matched by Dordt in the final minute as they fell 75-81.
Â
Sudmann had a game high 19 points with three rebounds and two steals. She was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
Madelyn Deitchler added 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals.
Â
Held and Benne rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Payton Slaughter added nine points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals. Â
Â
The Chargers will head to Orange City, Iowa next Wednesday for a meeting with #25 Northwestern.
