THREE CHARGERS PLACE TOP-10 AT SWEDES SHOOTOUT

The Briar Cliff women's golf team fired the low team score in round two of the Swedes Shootout Tuesday at Turkey Creek Golf Course. The Chargers shaved 16 strokes off their first-round tally and had three players place top-10.

"What a way to finish the fall season," said head coach Ben Irlbeck. "The ladies came out with guns-a-blazin'. They took a lead through nine holes, making up a 15-shot deficit. Bethany was tough on their home course though, and we lost the lead with about 3 holes to go. I honestly wasn't sure we could make up 15 shots on such a highly ranked opponent, but to do it in 9 holes showed what we are capable of. I'm very proud of the group and am really looking forward to what the spring season will bring!"

Helene Getz Bergmo continued her steady fall play Tuesday, leading the Chargers with a 78. Bergmo entered the day tied for sixth, but after shooting the lowest individual score of the day she finished in second place with a 163. She finished the tournament tied for the most birdies with five.

Frankie Valencia cut 12 shots off her first-round score after firing a 79 today. She started the day in 16th but moved all the way up to a tie for sixth. Valencia and Bergmo were the lone golfers to shot in the 70s in the second round.

Kelly Baade finished her tournament with a 171 (86, 85) and placed eighth individually. Grace Johanson shot a 184 (90, 94) and placed 17th, while Abbigale Miller was the fifth member of the Charger squad and finished 27th with a 203 (106, 97).

Baade and Bergmo paced the field in par-3 scoring throughout the tournament at +2 and +3, respectively. As a team, the Blue and Gold had the most birdies (10) and had the best scoring average on par 3s (3.60).

Sophia Johnson and Katie Wight golfed as individuals for the Cliff. Johnson shot a 219 (111, 108), while Wight had a 221 (107, 114).
