Chargers tied for second at GPAC Championships

The Briar Cliff men's golf team posted the best team score in round two of the GPAC Fall Qualifier Tuesday in Elkhorn, Nebraska. The Chargers shot an even par 288, jumping from fifth to a tie for second place with Midland.

"We got it going and kept it going today. We did have a couple slip ups along the way, but we battled back," said head coach Ben Irlbeck. "Consistent play out of Shaunak and Mason set the tone. Then Elijah used his power and finesse to birdie back his dropped shots."

Mason Collins, Elijah Lamoureux and Shaunak Rama posted top-10 finishes, as they carded matching 146 (+2) and are tied for seventh. After 74s (+2) in round one, Lamoureux and Collins recorded 72's (E) in round two. Collins tallied four birdies and Lamoureux had eight birdies over their 36 holes. Rama improved by six strokes in his second round, firing a 70 (-2) in his second round. He played his final nine holes, which played as the tougher stretch, bogey free with two birdies. Rama rolled in seven birdies.

Gregorio Fernandez rounded out the scoring for the Cliff on day two, turning in a score of 74 (+2). Fernandez is tied for 15th with his overall score of 150. Andrew Arndorfer was the fifth member of the Charger squad and had a 36-hole score of 158 and is tied for 38th.

Briar Cliff's score in round two is the best score posted in the conference tournament by the Chargers under coach Irlbeck.

"Overall, conditions were a little more difficult today than yesterday, we were just mentally more in the moment today," said Irlbeck. "As for the team, I couldn't be happier with the team chemistry and camaraderie. Top to bottom, they are all rooting each other on."

Morningside leads after the first two rounds of the GPAC Championships with a team score of 571 (-5). Sam Storey and Mason Weeks of Morningside hold the individual lead with scores of 141 (-3). The GPAC Championships will resume at the end of the spring season with another two-day event.

The Chargers will travel to Storm Lake, Iowa on October 1 for the first round of the Buena Vista Invite.
