The Briar Cliff women's volleyball team traveled to Forest City, Iowa Friday night, and won a thrilling five setter against Waldorf.
The Chargers won sets one and three, hitting .400 and .314 in the games, compared to .208 and .351 for the Warriors. Midway through the first set, the Chargers held a 14-10 lead and outscored the Warriors 11-5 to take set one 25-15.
"We came out mentally ready in set one and didn't really look back," said head coach
Lindsey Weatherford. "Of course, Waldorf didn't let up on their home court, but we are so proud of the way our girls never gave up."
Briar Cliff trailed 11-16 in set three, but five straight Charger points, including two service aces from
Tannah Heath would bring the Cliff within one point.
Madilyn Wagaman held serve for five straight points, with one ace to give BC a 21-17 lead. The Warriors evened up the score at 23-all, but back-to-back kills from
Chloe Johnson and
Toria Andre closed out the third set.
The fifth set between the two teams saw five lead changes, before the Chargers closed out the 15-12 win after a Warrior attacking error.
Johnson led the Blue and Gold with 13 kills with a .278 hitting percentage.
Abbie Ericson and
Taryn Nothem both added nine kills and Nothem recorded a .429 hitting percentage.
Toria Andre tallied six blocks and
Sami Wasmund had five blocks with eight kills.
"Chloe had a big night for us and kept hammering away when Waldorf attempted to make a comeback," noted Weatherford. "Our block was dominant all night and we will rely on it heavily throughout GPAC play!"
Tannah Heath had a team high 15 digs and four services aces. Wagaman dished out 23 assists while
Maureen Imrie had 21 assists.
The Chargers return to the Newman Flanagan Center Saturday for a GPAC matchup with Dakota Wesleyan. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
