BC battles through 15-inning game on Senior Day

The Briar Cliff baseball team battled through two tight doubleheaders against Morningside Sunday at Bishop Mueller Field but dropped both to the Mustangs. Game one was a 3-1 loss for the Cliff and game two was a 15-inning affair that ended 13-8 in favor of the visitors.
 
The Chargers also celebrated Senior Day for the Briar Cliff baseball classes of 2020 and 2021. Five seniors from the 2020 graduation group returned to Bishop Mueller to be recognized after their final season was cancelled due to COVID-19. 
 
Morningside led 2-0 through five frames. An RBI single by Darnell Prince scored Graham Palsma to cut the Mustang lead in half, but Morningside added an insurance run in the seventh for the 3-1 win. 
 
Jared Sitzmann, Mike Anthony, Harrison Jestel, Jake Allen, Trevor Adler, Matt Hmiliewski and Prince tallied one hit each. Nicholas Cole takes the game one loss, spending five innings on the mound and giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out three and walking one.
 
Game two was a marathon battle for both sides. BC went up 7-0 before allowing a four-run fifth inning by the Mustangs. They added three in the sixth and one in the seventh and the teams were tied at eight-all after nine innings.
 
The teams kept each other off the board until the Mustangs broke through in the 15th with five runs to win the contest. 
 
Tyler Kjose is tagged with the loss. Sitzmann registered four hits with two runs and two RBIs. Prince and Connor Lange also had two RBIs apiece. Tyler Kjose is tagged with the loss. 
 
The Chargers end the regular season 32-18 overall and 15-13 in GPAC play. Briar Cliff finished fifth in the GPAC standings and will travel to the Seward, Nebraska to play in the Concordia bracket of the postseason tournament. The Cliff will play Morningside in the opening game noon Thursday at Plum Creek Park.
