Charger baseball celebrated the completion of its infield turf project Sunday at Bishop Mueller Field and added more reason to celebrate, picking up a pair of wins over Hastings. BC won 4-1 and 9-4.
Â
Briar Cliff students, alums and fans filled the complex to celebrate the Bishop Mueller Complex Enhancement Project's first phase and the announcement of phase two, which will reconstruct the dugouts and add an indoor training facility to the park.Â
Â
"What a great day," said head coach
Corby McGlauflin. "It was great to see the entire BCU community at the field and even better with the way we played. Bats really came out hot and Houston was lights out in game two!"
Â
The Chargers put up all four on their game-one runs in the first inning of the contest. With
Jared Sitzmann on third,
Jake Federico put the ball in play to send Sitzmann home and reached first on an error.
Jake Allen blasted a three-run bomb on, his eighth homer of the season, to score
Darnell Prince and Federico and round out the Charger scoring.Â
Â
Six Chargers tallied hits in game one and
Mike Anthony went 1-for-2. Nick Cole gets the win on the mound, giving up eight hits and one run while striking out two.
Austin Carter came in for the save, allowing one hit in his single inning.Â
Â
The bats were hot for both teams in game two with a combined 19 hits in the contest.Â
Â
The Chargers trailed 3-1 after 3.5 innings, but a three-run fourth helped BC take the lead.
Connor Lange got it going as the fourth frame's leadoff batter, doubling to center field.
Mike Anthony reached on walk.
Â
Matthew Hmiliewski reached first on a missed catch, which scored Lange and send Anthony to third. Sitzmann tripled on the next at-bat, his third of the year, to score Lange and Anthony and put the Cliff up 4-3.
Â
Hastings tied things up in the top of the fifth, but Briar Cliff scored one in both the fifth and sixth and three in the seventh to secure the win.Â
Â
Houston Hawkins entered to pitch for the Chargers with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth and got them home team out of the jam with a flyout to Hmiliewski in center field.Â
Â
Hawkins takes the win for the Chargers, throwing 4.1 innings and giving up just one hit, one walk and striking out three.Â
Â
Dawson Forcella had an outstanding game for the Chargers, going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Federico, Sitzmann and Hmielewski had two RBIs apiece.Â
Â
The Chargers will go on the road for a neutral-site nonconference contest with Clarke University in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The team will return to GPAC action at Doane next weekend.Â
