Game Recap: Baseball |

Chargers walk off first game on new turf

On a memorable day for the Charger baseball program, it is only fitting that the team would win in memorable fashion. As the team played its first game on the new infield turf at Bishop Mueller, a walk-off single by Jake Federico helped BC start the home season 1-0. The win came over NCAA DII Southwest Minnesota State, head coach Corby McGlauflin's alma mater.

With two outs on the board and the Chargers down 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Jared Sitzmann hit a single to drive home Dawson Forcella and tie things up at 2-2. Matt Hmielewski entered the game as a pinch runner for Sitzmann and moved to second thanks to a walk for Cyler Melvin

Federico put down a hit to center field to score Hmielewski from second base for the team's first home win since the 2018-19 season.

"It's a great feeling to get out here and play on our new field and with our home fans," said McGlauflin. "These guys have worked their tails off and haven't been able to play baseball in almost a year, so I'm so proud of them for just sticking with it and trusting the process. I am absolutely thrilled for these guys."

The Mustangs put up a run in both the second and third innings and looked to add to that lead in the fourth with loaded bases and just one out. BC got out of the inning unscathed, however, by turning a double play and ending the top of the frame.

Harrison Jestel cut the Mustang lead in half with a home run in the bottom of the fourth, his fifth homer of the season.

Kyler Steinborn started the game on the mound for the Chargers, going four innings and giving up five hits, two runs and striking out three. He was relieved by Alex Kremer, who gets the win for his three innings of work (no hits, five strikeouts).

In addition to the three RBIs, Dawson Forcella had the only other hit for the Chargers.

BC dropped game two against the Mustangs 8-3. A four-run second inning helped Southwest out to a 6-0 lead. Down 8-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Graham Palsma and Hmielewski reached home for the Chargers for the 8-3 final.

The Chargers have only just started a 16-game home stand and the team will host seven more doubleheaders during the month of March. Next on the schedule is Presentation Friday and Saturday with 1 p.m. starts both days.
