Chargers cruise into GPAC semifinals, beat Jimmies 5-0

The Briar Cliff men's soccer cruised to a 5-0 victory over Jamestown Wednesday in the opening round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament. The Chargers advance to the conference semifinal round for the fourth year in a row and were the postseason tournament champions last season.
 
"It was a good performance by the group," said head coach Clark Charlestin. "Our focus and concentration has to remain a part of our identity for the rest of the journey."
 
Marcus Horwood sent a cross in the 39th minute, that found Michael Virgen who beat the Jimmie goalie to give the Cliff a 1-0 lead. BC outshot the Jimmies 6-4 and had more corner kicks 6-1 in the opening half.
 
The Chargers quickly put their lead out of reach, scoring three goals in a ten minute span to open the second half. Luis Paulo Sartor kicked off the scoring outburst in the 50th minute, converting on a penalty kick. Danny Baca scored back-to-back goals in the 56th and 59th minute to give the Chargers a 4-0 lead. Horwood tallied his second assist of the contest on Baca's first goal. Rodrigo Oliveira added onto the lead in the 78th minute, scoring unassisted.
 
Danny Baca put all three of his shots on frame to lead the Chargers. Vinicius Gregorio put two shots on goal. Sartor, Virgen, Oliveira and Sebastian Justiniano all put one shot on net apiece.
 
Leandro Faria made three saves in his 90 minutes in net for the Cliff. Faria tallied his fifth shutout of the season.
 
Briar Cliff held the edge in shots 14-8, shots on goal 10-3, corner kicks 9-4 and committed less fouls 4-11.
 
 
Diego Valle, Eric Fairtlough and Frankie Parkinson all put one shot on goal for the Jimmies. Alex Hamer made three saves and allowed five goals as the Jimmies goalkeeper.
 
Briar Cliff improves to 13-5 and will host the winner of Midland vs. Hastings on Saturday at Faber Field.
