The Briar Cliff wrestling team took part in its second event of the season Saturday, the DWU Open in Mitchell, South Dakota. A number of Chargers competed Saturday and Gabriel Howard, Ethan Krey and Matthew Wilke all earned spots on the podium for the Chargers.
Krey ended the day in fourth place at 141, the highest finish for BC at the event. After a bye in the first round, Krey notched back-to-back wins by major decision (9-1, 10-2). In the semifinal round, Krey was bested by Cameron Riggs of St. Cloud State and moved into the consolation semifinal. He beat Tommy Beringer 7-6 in that round before falling by tech fall in the third-place match.
Howard finished fifth at 133 lbs. His first three rounds were all bonus points victories, winning by tech fall in the opener and major decisions in rounds two and three. Howard dropped the next two matches and took fifth place by no contest in his last round.
Wilke also won his first two rounds, first by major decision and then by fall in just 24 seconds. Wilke was pinned in the semifinal and the consolation semi and lost in the fifth-place match to take sixth.
Jeremiah Glise and Nathan Atwood recorded two pins each on the day.
The Chargers will return to the mat Tuesday afternoon to host Central Methodist in dual action at the Newman Flanagan Center. The first match is set to start at 4 p.m.
