The Charger men's soccer team rallied back from a 2-0 deficit Wednesday night at Elwood Olsen Field to beat Morningside 4-3 in double overtime.
"It is an important win in regard to our aspirations and the mentality we are fostering in this group," said head coach
Clark Charlestin. "We showed great character and disciple despite having our back against the wall at two different occasions.We will regroup and look at ways to improve, hoping to keep the positive momentum going."
The Mustangs took an early advantage in the first half, scoring a goal in the 12th minute by Gero Zarbo, assisted by Victor Beker. Victor Beker would add another goal in the 66th minute to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
The Cliff grabbed a little momentum after
Sebastian Justiniano found the back of the net, off an assist from
Bernardo Torres in the 70th minute. The Chargers kept the scoring going a minute later with an equalizer from
Leonardo Devalos, assisted by Rodrigo Oliveria.
Morningside then took the lead back in the 76th minute as Jakob Fronmuller scored off an assist from Victor Beker. With time winding down at the end of the second half,
Gabriel Moretto scored just before the 89th minute mark to tie the game and force overtime.
Both teams battled in the first 10 minutes and forced a second overtime. Halfway through the final period
Marcus Horwood fired a strike, scoring in the 106th minute to give the Cliff the walk off victory.
Leandro Faria played all 107 minutes for the Cliff making three saves on the night.
Luis Paulo Sartor along with Justiano also played 107 minutes for the Cliff.
Alpha Faye and
Michael Virgen both contributed two shots on the contest.
The Chargers made the most of their opportunities as Morningside out-shot the Cliff 16-22. The Cliff had the advantage in corner kicks 9-7.
The Chargers improve to 9-5 overall (7-1 GPAC) and return home to Faber Field for a contest with Concordia Wednesday, October 20th.
