The Charger wrestling team earned a hard fought 22-19 victory over NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State University Thursday evening inside the Newman Flanagan Center.
Â
"It was good to get back a win over an NCAA Division II that beat us last season, the overarching theme right now among our guys is growth," said Head Coach
Donaco Watts. "But with that said, we still have a lot to clean up and a long way to go if we want to be in the hunt when Championship Season gets here.
Â
The Mustangs took the opening 285-pound bout before the Chargers took the next two bouts. Daruiz Black earned a 12-1 major decision victory at the 125-pound match while
Dante Rigal followed up at 133 with a pin.
Â
Trystan Berry at 149 earned a pin in the first round to extend the Charger lead.
Jackson Balmer won 16-2 for a major decision victory while
Erik Lessears won at 174 with a 11-4 decision victory.
Â
"I want to shout out Dariuz for earning a dominant win after being out with an LCL sprain," said Watts. "Dante and Trystan came through with 2 falls that were ultimately the difference in the dual. We always preach earning bonus points and saving bonus points. That was evident tonight."
Â
The Chargers move to 2-0 in duals this season, and will travel to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma this Sunday for the Missouri Valley Duals.
